Your Community Needs You. Winter is coming and with the snow and ice, walking and driving can be difficult. However, these conditions can be improved with the addition of a little Community Spirit through the input of Gritting Volunteers.
In 2010 there was a change in Suffolk County Council’s (SCC) Insurance Policy and the change allowed some residents to use local grit bins on local roads and pavements but not on private roads and paths. Following the Insurance Policy change, the Suffolk Volunteer Gritting Scheme was setup. Sadly, to date, Great Cornard seems to have missed out on this great FREE Membership scheme.
To be covered by the SCC Insurance, volunteers need to be registered and this is a very simple process. All the registered Gritting Volunteer needs to do is agree to a few basic requirements and follow the Snow Code.
So what will I be doing? Initially, I will liaise with the potential Gritting Volunteers and outline the scheme requirements to them. Once launched the individual Great Cornard schemes should be self-sustaining and require minimum maintenance. Where necessary, I will continue to monitor and offer support for existing and new schemes, and be contactable if required.
Great Cornard already has about ten Grit Bins but more may be needed and I will be seeking funding for these and other basic equipment.
. . . and your part? If you live in Great Cornard, I will value your support for the Winter Gritting Scheme by either highlighting potential problem areas or, better still, offering to be a Gritting Volunteer. I can be easily contacted by email at gritting@cornard.info .
I look forward to hearing from you.
