Nephrotic syndrome is when the kidneys are damaged, causing them to leak large amounts of protein from the blood into the urine.  This can cause pronounced swelling in parts of the body, most visible in the head, hands and feet, which can become painful; Increased blood pressure, Low blood protein and often a high level of cholesterol in the blood.
