BABERGH DISTRICT COUNCIL GAGS ITS OWN DISTRICT COUNCILLORS ON CARSONS DRIVE
In an extraordinary development a letter has been dispatched to a number of Babergh District Councillors barring them from attending the site visit on 23rd March, voting or even being present in the District Council Chamber when discussion takes place on the Carson’s Drive development within the Local Plan on the 11th April.
The reason for this “gagging” is that they were individuals who had joined over 2200 people in signing the petition against this development organised by the Save Gainsborough Country Action Group (SGCAG).
Purportedly as they have signed the petition they have a personal and prejudicial interest in the Local Plan.
Stefan Kosciuszko, Chairman of the SGCAG commented “As we all know the officers will stop at nothing to try and get their own way on this type of matter. It is worth pointing out that at no point were these gagged Councillors a Member of the SGCAG.
If signing a petition is not allowed then presumably voting on this matter at Parish Council is not allowed, in which case how are our Councillors meant to democratically represent us as voters. The answer may lie in the fact that perhaps the Council officers are not concerned with democracy and will ignore the voices of over 2200 people and the local community.
I am confident that in spite of such manoeuvres, the remaining District Councillors will see through this travesty perpetrated on their fellow colleagues and vote for democracy and sound planning by throwing out of the Local Plan this development, inserted by the back door and based solely on the views of one individual marching to the tune of big money developers.”
