A DOG'S LIFE - A Non Grid-Type Logic Problem by Roger Burden

Having exhausted themselves running about on the meadows, four dogs are sitting down waiting for their owners to catch up. (The illustration shows mongrels so you can’t tell which dog is which from the picture.) From the clues given, can you fill in below each dog its name, its breed and the name of the family it belongs to?

1.     The Hall family’s pet, who is called Ringo, isn’t dog B in the picture.

2.     The boxer is immediately right of the dog that belongs to the Carpenters, and immediately left of Brandy.

3.     Prince, who isn’t dog A in the picture, doesn’t belong to the Finch family.

4.     Dog C is the poodle; Danny isn’t the spaniel.

CATEGORIES.

Dog Names:  Brandy, Danny, Prince, Ringo.

Dog Breeds:  boxer, Labrador, poodle, spaniel.

Owners: Daley, Finch, Green, Hall.

A DOG’S LIFE  -  SOLUTION.

Since dog C is the poodle (4), from clue 2 dog B must be the boxer, the Greens’ dog must be dog A and dog C, the poodle, must be Brandy. So dog A can’t be Ringo, the Halls’ dog, which isn’t dog B either (1), so must be dog D. Prince isn’t dog A (3), so must be dog B, leaving dog A as Danny. So he isn’t the spaniel (4) and must be the Labrador, leaving the spaniel as the Hall family’s Ringo, dog D. Finally, from clue 3, the boxer, dog B, isn’t the Finchs’ dog, so must belong to the Daleys, leaving the Finchs’ dog as Brandy the poodle, dog C.

IN SUMMARY

A, Danny, Labrador, Green.

B, Prince, boxer, Daley.

C, Brandy, poodle, Finch.

D, Ringo, spaniel, Hall.
