T.A.N.K. Residents Group

Page updated - 27 November 2009

TANK (which takes its initials from the founders - Tina, Ann, Nicky, Kim) was formed in November 2005 and set up by a group of Great Cornard mums as a result of consultation about local issues with residents in Rede Way, Raydon Way, Hartest Way and Minsmere Way, Great Cornard. The aim of the group has been to improve the Quality of Life in their Community with particular emphasis on providing more activities for children in the area.

TANK were firstly involved in an art project and they helped to engage other local residents across a broad spectrum of ages in developing themes for the project which aimed to redesign an open space area in a housing estate with artwork. This involved the local children creating words and images for the large stone artworks which are now embedded in stone along a series of pathways in the open space.

The project led to other events being held to improve the local environment, such as ‘litter picks’ for the local children. In recognition of the children’s efforts the group organised a children’s picnic and also a ‘bug hunt’ which involved them identifying different species of insects. Further ‘litter picks’ were held which led to the group arranging a children’s Christmas party for 70 local children. The children were taken by bus to the venue, entertained with party games and Father Christmas brought presents for all.

TANK followed this with the staging of a Mini Olympic’s in the Anglia Estate play area involving 80 children in sporting activities for six weeks during the summer holidays 2008. A grand medal-giving finale was held followed by a fun session and tea for all the children.

On 15 August 2009 the group held their ‘New and Old’ Street Party for all the Community and what a day we had! The Sun was shining and it was a hot hot day!!!  WOW we had over 350 people come to have some fun!! There was tremendous support from so many people (too many to mention here) and TANK would like to thank everyone in and around Great Cornard for attending and making this a day to remember. The Great was definitely in Cornard on this day. [I was lucky enough to attend and it was a really well planned day, ‘Well Done’ everyone involved – Webmaster.]

TANK achieved two awards in 2009 - Community Achievement Award and the Special Award - awarded by Babergh District Council for their work within their community. TANK have planned to continue their work, and are hoping to extend their work throughout the whole village of Great Cornard from young children to the elderly.
